I don't suppose there's a weirder sporting trophy anywhere on the planet.
Then again, cricket is a strange and wonderful game.
(If you have no idea what I'm talking about, all is explained here.)
The Corridor of Uncertainty has temporarily closed down in order to join the celebrations. Aussie Tim Blair is taking it on the chin.
PS: Oxblog's Patrick Belton has a pre-session round-up, as well as an explanation of the origins of the word "pom". And Random Cricket Thoughts offers some excellent screen captures.
PPS: Laban Tall thinks it could all be Bush's fault.
Hi, Clive. Glad you liked my screen captures. Your comment about the weirdest sports trophy got me thinking about the Stanford Axe. Since you were a Hoover fellow I'm surprised you didn't mention it, since personally, even as a lifelong Stanford fan, I find it hard to say an axe is any less weird a trophy than a little urn. :-)

Patrick Belton writes about the "South Asians who invented the game - a fact we often forget in light of its rising popularity in Britain these days". I'm still trying to work out if that's meant to be a joke, but I don't think so.

Monday was perfect, Clive. West Ham won 4-0 too. Only problem was that I had to spend the afternoon away from the cricket at Islington Green School's speech day- you'd have loved it, they've gone back to uniforms, prefects, head boys and girls and the good and the great (well, Davids Dein and Puttnam) delivering homilies- and all in the calming atmosphere of Sadlers Wells.
