» "The highest temple of a religion in decline" from sisu
We were struck with something that Nicholas Lemann, dean of Columbia's Graduate School of Journalism -- the highest temple of a religion in decline, according to Hugh Hewitt in The Weekly Standard-- said about our own alma mater: Harvard is [Read More]

Browne made some useful comments about PC language, but one thing that annoyed me was the concept of 'western self-loathing'. This cliche has become the diametrical opposite of PC, serving to stifle debate in exactly the same way.

People who complain about the evils of colonialism feel 'guilty' (as Browne puts it) of one thing only: The evils of colonialism. Acknowledging the undesirable parts of our history is essential if we are to evolve as a nation in a positve manner. Political Correctness (for all its faults) has been useful in this respect.

"But to read The Retreat of Reason, a new pamphlet published by the British social policy think tank, Civitas, is to be reminded how a fair portion of the country's thinking classes have shut down their mental faculties."

Saying the "thinking classes have shut down their mental faculties" implies that at one time there really was a thinking class that had mental faculties. Unfortunately 99.99% of people are slavish believers either in the latest fad or "traditional" beliefs. People never have and probably never will actually think for themselves. The notion of a thinking class is a misinterpretation of what happens when people get educated. Education merely converts people from slavish devotion in traditional beliefs to slavish devotion to the latest fad.

Clive your write:-

"After five years of vainly trying to explain to all and sundry why George W. Bush is not Hitler in cowboy boots, I have decided not to waste any more breath."

Very reluctantly I have given up on George W Bush. Guantanamo, Rendition Flights, the Google Aol Microsoft Subpoena, etc. seem to me to be not only wrong in their own right but symptomatic of an administration that believes 'means justify ends'. I find this ironic as I would have assumed that George W. would have been very aware of the biblical quote "For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?". New Labour also appear to believe that ends justify means. Sadly it looks as if the new man Cameron has also jumped on the bandwagon of spin, focus groups and ends justifying means. I would rather he were not elected, and the country went further to the dogs, than he were to gain power the New Labour way.

I am not a religious man and I believe that Christ, as portrayed in the King James Bible, 'walked the talk'. In my view this 'talk' underpins Western Civilisation. If we want to protect Western Civilisation (as I passionately do) we must hold our leaders to the underlying principles of Judaea/Christianity. Christ's Crucifixion is surely the ultimate example of a Man refusing to allow ends to justify means.

For what shall it profit the USA to incarcerate and torture people offshore (so as to technically avoid the US legal system) if, in the process, the 'soul' of America is violated.

I can think of no better use of your breath than to hound the perpetrators of these crimes against America's fundamental beliefs and values (its soul) out of office.

You are a poster child for what Clive ws referring to, Colin.

That being said...

I agree, Colin. There is no point in trying to have a discussion with people of that ilk anymore. Their minds are closed and they are deaf and blind.

You will note that their behaviour is much akin to a crisis cult. You see, the world of "1968" was shattered and broken forever on that bright Tuesday morning in September, and these people simply can not cope with that simple fact. They, like the Ghost Dancers, seem to think if they behave the way they do that their "world" will come back. Got news for them-it ain't gonna happen.

Grrr, I agree with CLIVE, not Colin.

anti-Americanism has all the rationality of any religion.

"Education merely converts people from slavish devotion in traditional beliefs to slavish devotion to the latest fad." I used to think this was true, but now I see that just as often the result of education is "slavish devotion to whatever the 'in' fad was when I was in college, even if that was three or four decades ago".

In the Arab world ideological zealots pushing outmoded ideas seem to average about 27 years old, but where I live in California 99% of the zealotry on display comes from middle-aged Volvo-driving liberals.

It would be nice if people re-examined their ideas every ten years or so, but most people seem to put them on, like a comfortable tweed jacket with leather-patched elbows, which they then keep wearing until well beyond retirement.
