So is that new Rolling Stones song really an attack on George W. Bush? Roger L. Simon has his own theory about "dotty old Mick". Some of us stopped taking Jagger seriously around the time of Gimme Shelter, the riveting Maysles documentary about the debacle at Altamont. (I've just added the film to my new "Screen" sidebar.) The sight of poor little Mick strutting his Satanic majesty stuff and then panicking when the Hell's Angels run amok near the stage is one of those iconic Sixties moments. The Emperor definitely had no clothes. I wish I could find my copy of Bill Graham's autobiography. which has somehow disappeared off my shelves. As I recall, the legendary rock promoter had nothing but contempt for the Stones' criminal opportunism at Altamont - a disaster waiting to happen.
Today's Telegraph hits just the right note:
At last someone with real authority has said it: America's senior policy makers are risibly out of touch. They have no idea how the younger generation lives. Cushioned from the stark realities of life by their vast wealth and insuperable self-esteem, they travel the world in private jets, staying in luxury hotels and socialising only with flatterers and hangers-on.
Thank goodness we have rock stars such as Sir Mick to administer a much-needed "reality check".
