More than two million downloads of that Ricky Gervais podcast? Jeff Jarvis is pleased. I'm mystified, again.
UPDATE: The Beeb's former D-G, Greg Dyke, asks why we're suffering from a dearth of quality sitcoms. Here's one explanation:
Mainstream talent - both writing and acting - is increasingly not interested in the traditional mainstream sitcom. The Comedy Store generation of performers and writers - people such as Ricky Gervais - are much happier writing and performing to "smart" audiences than mass pre-9pm BBC1 or ITV audiences.
It's possible to be smart and funny and popular, of course (Seinfeld proved that much) but it's easier to be smart than funny.
I have to say I am with you on this one, Clive. Totally baffling.
