The death of left- and centre liberalism has created a hole at the heart of American politics, and our political discourse is suffering for it, on both ends of the political spectrum. The Left suffers for the obvious reasons, but the Right suffers too: in the absence of any coherent popular and intellectual challenge, it has descended into a lazy and bullying triumphalism.
