Are the "populist warblings" of book bloggers lowering the tone, as Observer journalist Rachel Cooke argues? Alan Bissett strikes back in the Guardian, and comes to the aid of one of Cooke's targets, Susan Hill, author of The Woman in Black. Hill's blog is an enjoyably rambling read. Somehow she even finds time to write replies to schoolkids who send irritating messages like this one:
Iam doing my Gcse's and the assignment I have to do it is based on the women in black. I would be grateful if you cound answer my question. Could you please tell me what was the difference and common thing in women in black compared with other writer's ghost stories?
As you may know by now, she received an even ruder e-mail from a literary editor who didn't care for her grumble about the book-reviewing trade.
