I keep this photo framed in my hallway. Fred Kite's happy day. (That's Irene Handl as Mrs Kite, of course.)
At the weekend, clearing out a cupboard, I unearthed my old video of the immortal I'm All Right, Jack, and couldn't resist running through my favourite scene one more time. Fred is in the parlour, trying to introduce naive young Stanley Windrush to the glories of Marx and Lenin, and the mighty achievements of the worker's state. Stanley does his best to sound interested:
WINDRUSH: Have you ever been to Russia, Mister Kite?
KITE: [SUDDENLY MISTY-EYED] Er, no, not yet. It's the one place I'd like to go to, though. All them cornfields, and ballet in the evening.
"Jeropodising." Genius.
