Paul McCartney tried this on the London Underground in the late 80s I think. If I remember rightly, he wasn't elaborately disguised, just dressed scruffily and wearing a woolly hat and beard, but no one recognized him and he made less money than the guy whose pitch he'd taken over. More than one person remarked on how good his Beatles covers were.

I always stop to listen to street musicians, if only for a minute. And I always try to drop a buck. Perhaps more people should, even busy ones...
